Suspect identified in five-car post-wedding crash
BARRY COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - We now know the name of the person arrested in a suspected case of road rage following a wedding in Barry County.
Police say Juan Dominguez-Garcia is now behind bars as three other people are recovering after a 5-car crash on Saturday night.
It all happened on M-37 and Yankee Spring Road, just outside Middleville.
Police say all five of the vehicles were coming from the same wedding at the Barry County Expo Center.
Police tell Newschannel 3 that they believe the initial crash between two cars may have been intentional, but they are uncertain as to whether or not the two were racing or what may have sparked it.
The groom's cousin spoke to Newschannel 3 about the scene she witnessed, that she called chaotic.
It was just after 1:00 a.m. when Viviana Quintino left her cousin's wedding to head home. But she didn't get far.
"You see all these cars in front of you stopping so you're a little curious whats going on," she said.
So, she and her boyfriend got out of the car to check it out.
"I see like a truck flipped over and I look over to my left and I see a red camaro flipped upside down and, ya know, other cars hit from behind and it happened so fast you're scared there's dead people," Quintino recalled.
She says that's when she saw a young girl laying in the road.
"This girl is bleeding from her head, Quintino said. Her leg is a little injured, so I get a little scared; I'm like, 'We gotta do something fast.'"
She and another woman helped the girl up and into her car.
"I'm trying to get her to calm down; she's losing a lot of blood and I'm like, 'You're gonna be ok, you're gonna make it, you're gonna be fine,'" Quintino said.
But it doesn't end there.
"Next thing ya know, I hear this big crash and it had been a car that had been driving pretty fast; hits my car's left backside, swerves out to the left and crashes into the grass area," she recalled.
Quintino says that driver was taken to the hospital along with two young girls, and police arrested 19 year old Juan Dominguez Garcia for operating while intoxicated causing injury a felony.
"At least nobody passed away, Quintino said. Ya know, ya gotta be thankful about something cause it could've been worse."
But its something she will never forget a strange ending to what was supposed to be a happy beginning for her cousin.
The Barry County Sheriff's Department says both alcohol and speed played a role in the crash.
As for the three people who were hospitalized as a result--they are expected to survive.
