Doctors and cancer survivors speaking out over tanning booths
LANSING, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Both doctors and cancer survivors plan to take the floor in Lansing on Tuesday to take a stand against tanning beds.
Their goal is to ban indoor tanning for minors and protect Michigan kids from cancer.
The group includes doctors with the Michigan State Medical Society, a state representative from Royal Oak and a young cancer survivor.
They will testify before the Michigan House Regulatory Reform Committee at 9am on Tuesday.
As part of their presentation, they will testify that indoor tanning has been directly linked to a dramatically increased risk of many different cancers, including eye cancer and melanoma.
The group says they're worried because, even though people know about these risks, tanning bed use by teen girls is at epidemic proportions.
They say one out of every three girls in the 12th grade goes tanning regularly.
