Father of Paw Paw crash victim speaks out
VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - An 18-year-old who survived a deadly crash in Paw Paw is home tonight and his father is speaking only to Newschannel 3.
Sunday night, Van Buren County Deputies say 18-year-old Emily Lauer was killed when she lost control of her car on 64th Avenue in Paw Paw Township and crashed.
Police say she was speeding, trying to jump a bridge.
Two other teens were inside the car at the time, including 18-year-old Koty Combs.
Tim Combs tells us his son, 18-year-old Koty Combs is home from the hospital, recovering from a severe concussion and a fractured skull.
"He's in and out but he's able to talk. He knows where he's at and basically he's just very sore, but he's handling everything the best that we all can do," said Combs.
Combs says his son, along with 18-year-old Emily Lauer and another teen, were heading to a friend's house Sunday night on 64th Avenue.
Police tell us Emily was speeding, tried to jump a bridge and lost control. Emily was killed on impact.
Combs says his son was wearing his seat belt that night and it saved his life.
"God was watching over him, and we had a lot of support from Paw Paw, all over. And I just want to thank everybody for the support for my family, and the other family out there too," said Combs.
Combs says Koty found out what happened to Emily the morning after the crash in the hospital.
"Basically, we were all there, his brother. Basically, let him know what happened and he just closed his eyes and started crying," said Combs.
Now Combs has this advice to other teenagers and their parents.
"Just cherish your kids as best you can, and hopefully for the kids all over don't leave upset with your parents because you never know what can happen day to day." said Combs.
Combs says because of Koty's head injury, he'll have to be monitored 24/7 for the next month.
Emily's funeral is planned for Thursday.
