Sheriff's Office identifies man in custody in Sturgis man's murder
STURGIS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Well-known Sturgis businessman David Locey was found shot to death in his office early Wednesday morning.
Just over 12 hours later, the man in jail tonight connected to the murder has been identified.
The St. Joseph County Sheriff confirmed for Newschannel 3 that a man by the name of Andy Brown is in custody, and that he is a suspect in the case.
Sources tell Newschannel 3 that Brown was a former employee who was recently fired.
St. Joseph County Prosecutor John McDonough says the last time Locey was seen alive was when he stopped at a BP gas station shortly after 7:00 a.m. Wednesday.
Then, just before 8:00, Sturgis Police were called to his accounting office on M-66.
"Another employee came to work this morning, and found Mr. Locey dead," McDonough said.
The prosecutor tells Newschannel 3 that Locey was shot in the head.
"We don't believe it was a random act of violence," he added.
The Sheriff's Department says the primary suspect is Andy Brown, who was arrested on a business-related charge connected to the murder.
The St. Joseph County Medical Examiner came to take a look at the crime scene during the day Wednesday.
He says he's known Locey for more than 20 years, and it was one of the hardest things he's had to do.
An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.
Brown is also expected to be arraigned Thursday.
The Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce released a statement Wednesday night on Locey's death.
It said: "The chamber has lost a great board member, but Sturgis has lost a great family man, great friend, and great supporter of this community. We will miss you, Dave, more than you could have known. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and with his Locey CPA family."
