WMU prof gets $500,000 to study ethics of cyberwar
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) - A Western Michigan University philosophy professor has received a $500,000 federal grant to study the ethics of computer warfare.
The Kalamazoo school announced Tuesday that Fritz Allhoff got the grant from the National Science Foundation "to study ethical issues associated with cyberwarfare."
Western Michigan says the grant is part of a project called "Safeguarding Cyberspace with Ethical Rules for Cyberwarfare." It's a collaboration also involving California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif.
Allhoff says "new technologies tend to get into play before the ethics have been thought out." He says one goal of the project "is to try to stay in front of the ethical issues in cyberwarfare, hoping to promote dialogue and policy that is ethically informed."
