Michigan lawmakers weigh in on the shutdown
MICHIGAN (NEWSCHANNEL 3) The blame game continues in Washington DC as lawmakers, both Republican and Democrat, speak out about the government shutdown.
Republicans say the shutdown is caused by the refusal of the White House to negotiate on the controversial health care law, while Democrats say they are open to making changes to the health care law, but not while federal spending is being held hostage.
Newschannel 3 spoke to a pair of Michigan lawmakers on the events in DC.
Michigans Democratic Senator Carl Levin had this to say about the gridlock;
They get what they elect, said Sen. Levin. What theyre getting at the moment is government which is not functioning.
Michigan Republican Representative Fred Upton also spoke out on the government shutdown, saying its time for lawmakers to move on and bring the shutdown to an end.
Its pretty clear that the president is not going to, on his watch, support any effort to defund it (the Affordable Care Act), most observers see that, said Rep. Upton. Weve had those votes and frankly at this point, we need to move on.
