Tigers heading to decisive game 5 in Oakland in ALDS
DETROIT (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The Detroit Tigers will live to play another day.
Max Scherzer made an appearance out of the bullpen, and closer Joaquin Benoit shut the door on the A's, cinching up an 8-6 victory and a trip to Oakland for a decisive fifth and final game.
Scherzer would likely have started Game 5 in Oakland on Thursday night, but his relief appearance means that honor will go to 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner, Justin Verlander.
Bartolo Colon will take the hill for the A's.
Colon took the loss in Game 1, also in Oakland, going 6 innings, with 10 hits, 3 earned runs and 4 strikeouts.
The Tigers took that game 3-2.
Verlander, for his part, pitched 7 innings of scoreless ball, giving up only 4 hits and fanning 11 in a masterful game 2 performance, which nevertheless ended in a 1-0 Tigers loss.
The first pitch is tentatively scheduled for 9:07 p.m. Eastern time.
