New information on victim in fatal US-131 crash near I-94
PORTAGE, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Portage Police have released new information Monday night in a deadly rush-hour crash that backed up traffic on US-131 for hours.
The only information police have offered about the victim is to identify him as a 20-year-old male, from Kalamazoo.
Both southbound lanes of US-131 were shut down Monday night near exit 34, as Portage Police responded to a fatal car crash.
Police say the 9-1-1 call came in shortly before 5:00 p.m.
The witnesses were following the vehicle, following the accident off southbound 131, they indicated the driver swerved off the road, so we are not sure what caused him to swerve off the road, said Kevin Gleesing, with Portage Police.
Police say the man driving the car was not wearing a seat belt and hit the cement underpass head-on going 70 miles an hour.
The impact ejected him from the vehicle and he died at the scene.
We're still investigating the accident to try and determine exactly who the driver is, Gleesing said.
Police diverted traffic off 131 to 94 for about 2 hours as police reconstructed the accident scene.
Portage Police say they did not find anything illegal in the car.
