Implosion details set at ex-mill site in Muskegon
MUSKEGON, Mich. (AP) - Details are set for plans to use explosives this month to demolish a 10-story former power plant at the site of a shuttered paper mill in Muskegon.
Demolition project engineer Ken Callow tells The Muskegon Chronicle says the aim of the Oct. 27 implosion is to essentially tip over the massive power plant structure. Two remaining smokestacks at the Sappi paper mill site are expected to be taken down separately.
Callow is overseeing the project for Melching Inc., which owns the western Michigan property.
The implosion is planned for a Sunday morning, about 9:30 a.m. or 10 a.m. Lakeshore Drive will be closed and businesses and homes nearby will be evacuated as a precaution. Plans aim to minimize the impact on the adjacent Lakeside Neighborhood.
