Suspected drugged driver tries to run officer off road
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says a driver tried to run one of their officers off of the road Friday.
It started around 1:45 a.m. in the 1100 block of South Park Street.
The officer noticed that a car was tailgating her patrol car as she was driving northbound on Park. The vehicle was so close that she couldn't see the vehicle's headlights in her rearview mirror.
In the 600 block of Park the vehicle swerved to the left and accelerated rapidly. The driver then swerved to the right, forcing the officer to brake hard to avoid a collision.
Police say the driver tried to hit the patrol car two more times before additional officers arrived on scene.
The suspect, a 29-year-old from Kalamazoo, fought with officers as they arrested him.
Police say they found suspected heroin as well as meth-making components in the vehicle.
Officers believed that the driver was under the influence of drugs. They were taken to the hospital for evaluation before being taken to jail.
The suspect faces charges of felonious assault with a motor vehicle, resisting and obstructing an officer, possession of heroin, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs and possession of meth making components.
