State Rep. Margaret O'Brien running for State Senate
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The race for the District 20 State Senate seat is heating up.
State Rep. Margaret O'Brien(R) announced live on Newschannel 3 Wednesday morning she is throwing her hat into the ring. She will be looking to fill the seat being vacated by incumbent Tonya Schuitmaker(R) who is seeking re-election to the senate by way of the new 26th District.
O'Brien says "I talked it over with my family, prayed about, they gave their blessing and I decided to run for the state senate."
She says she was encouraged by her constituents. "I'm here for the community" she says, "I love serving my community and I want to do it in a new way."
Also running for the State Senate seat are fellow Republican and former state representative Lorence Wenke and current state Rep. Sean McCann(D).
O'Brien, a life-long resident of Kalamazoo County, was first elected in November 2010 to the Michigan House to represent the city of Portage as well as the townships of Oshtemo, Prairie Ronde, Schoolcraft and Texas.
While she will be actively campaigning for the senate seat, O'Brien says she will continue working for her constituents. "I'm committed to doing the job I was elected to do."
