Kalamazoo police identify victim in homicide on Church Street
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Kalamazoo Public Safety officers are investigating a murder on the city's north side.
They say it all started with a 9-1-1 call from a home on the 1400 block of North Church Street around 4:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
Police found 52-year-old Rita Kay Williams dead inside that home.
At this time, we're still waiting to hear more from police as to why this all happened.
We know that a 28-year-old man from Benton Harbor is a person of interest in the investigation, as he is believed to be the last to see Williams alive.
More than 24 hours later, though, the community is eager for answers.
A young lady ran out of the house and she said her mom had been killed, someone had killed her mom, recalled neighbor Aaliya Buchanan of that day.
Neighbors tell Newschannel 3 they know little about the Williams, who they say moved in about 4 months ago.
Everything was taped off and I heard family members saying something happened to a loved one, said another neighbor, Ashley Scott.
Yesterday they saw a woman and child running out of the home screaming for help. Neighbors say a man who was often here telling them to "shut up," was then speeding off in a green car.
I'm just playing the waiting game like everyone else wanting to know what really happened, Scott said.
But who these people are, and why Williams was killed remains a mystery, with police only telling Newschannel 3 that she was murdered.
It's too close to home, Buchanan said. There's been too many killings over here, so it needs to simmer down.
Police spent hours on-scene collecting evidence and snapping photos, but they told Newschannel 3 that the investigation is an ongoing one.
The prosecuting attorney's office says that at this point charges have not yet been filed.
