Cause of fatal apartment fire investigated
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - We're working to learn more about what caused a deadly fire at the Village Apartments in Kalamazoo.
Right now apartment security is parked outside the building to make sure no one breaks through the fence because the structure is unstable.
Firefighters say the fire started in a third floor unit just after midnight Monday.
According to family, it's where the victim and her boyfriend were living.
Officials say Daysi Rojas was killed. Her boyfriend was taken to the hospital with severe burns.
Friends of the family say they are devastated.
"I want people to know that she is a great lady. She is so nice and friendly with everybody, there was no one she didn't like, she liked everybody," said Carmen Garreton.
"The fire system is supposed to kick in when something like this happens, and it turns out all those things failed this time, we are saddened one of our friends had to pay for this," said Gonzalo Garreton.
The apartment management says if there is fire in one unit the only warning for other tenants is a blinking light in the hallway.
