Mother accused of attempted murder, suicide, to retain parental rights for now
(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Battle Creek native accused of trying to kill her daughter, who has autism, as well as herself will retain her parental rights for now.
The Department of Human Services wanted to take away 45-year-old Kelli Stapleton's rights to her three kids.
But according to family members, a judge decided Friday it's too early for that decision to be made.
Stapleton is charged with attempted murder after police say she lit charcoal grills inside a van earlier this month and tried to kill her 14-year-old daughter Issy, as well as herself, by carbon monoxide poisoning.
She is being held without bond and is due back in court next week.
