Former MLB player sentenced for sex assaults
BARRY COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Barry County man could spend up to 15 years behind bars for sexually assaulting multiple teenage girls.
Prosecutors say Chad Curtis, a volunteer trainer at Lakewood High School and former Major League Baseball player, touched girls between the ages of 13 and 16 last year at the school near Lake Odessa.
Before a packed courtroom Thursday, Curtis was sentenced to 7 to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting multiple teenage girls.
While he had maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings, on Thursday his victims read statements detailing why he should go to prison.
"You are a manipulator and a perpetual liar," one victim sad. "You know exactly what you did to me those two days, and how you manipulated me into staying quiet. Your actions those days when you sexually assaulted me were purely selfish."
Speaking before the judge, another victim recounted her relationship with Curtis.
"I believed the first time when you said it wouldn't happen again," she said. "I even believed you in September when you expressed how sorry you were and asked for my forgiveness."
Curtis still maintains his innocence, and spoke for nearly an hour, arguing that he was nothing more than a mentor and trainer who helped treat sports injuries.
At one point, a victim to whom he was referring ran out of the room in tears.
Despite Curtis's statement that he had no intention of upsetting anyone, there were plenty of upset people in the room.
Like all of the other victims and their families, he pleaded with Curtis to be honest.
"When are you gonna get up and tell these people the wrong you did and ask for forgiveness," he asked.
The prosecutor issued a statement Thursday, saying she is pleased the judge handed down the maximum possible sentence and hopes it will bring a measure of peace to the victims and their families.
