Person in custody in connection to Sturgis man's death
STURGIS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Someone is in custody in connection to the death of a well-known West Michigan accountant.
The St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department says someone shot and killed David Locey in his CPA office near Sturgis Wednesday morning.
There's still a very active scene at Locey's office, and the Sheriff says the person in custody could be related to the case, although they weren't arrested for murder.
Meanwhile, the community is reacting to the murder of a man very well known in Sturgis.
Jerry Warstler says he woke up Wednesday morning to find a crime scene at the end of his street.
"I walked down, and people were suggesting maybe someone had been shot," Warstler said.
Even more troubling, he soon found that his friend David Locey had been found shot and killed in his office on M-66.
"I'm a Kiwanis member, and he's been in Kiwanis Club, and I think he was slated to be President of the Noon Kiwanis Club here in Sturgis," Warstler said. "He's been very active in the community. It's going to be disheartening, and unbelievable really."
Locey also ran a Christmas tree farm, and was on the Glen Oaks Community College board of trustees from 1995 to 2011.
Warstler says he leaves behind a wife and several kids.
"Very pleasant to be around; dedicated to service," Warstler said of Locey. "This is really a surprise."
Investigators say Locey was found dead in his office just before 8:00 a.m., with a single gunshot wound to the head, but would not give any other details.
Beth Stevens, who lives across the street from the family, told us that her heart goes out to them.
"I feel horrible; just shocked," she said. "I can't imagine what happened."
For their part, Locey's family is requesting privacy at this time.
The Sheriff says there should be more information released later Wednesday night.
