Van Buren Co. family nearly loses presents for holidays

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Local police came to the aid of a West Michigan couple who lost their Christmas gifts due to a simple mistake.

Joice Caron says she and her husband went to the Marathon gas station on Red Arrow Highway in Paw Paw to donate gifts to local families in need.

But a mix-up by her husband led to a bigger donation than they intended.

"When he came back, he said he put all the bags in the dumpster that were in the truck, and I said, 'No, not all the bags. Tell me you didn't do all the bags.'" Joice explained. "He said, 'I did,' and I said, 'Those were Christmas gifts.'"

Some of the gifts were intended for family members.

The Carons called Van Buren County Sheriff's deputies to see if they could do anything to get their family's presents returned to them.

After making several phone calls to the Humane Society and a few trips to the collection box, deputies were able to track down the unintended gifts in a matter of days and return them to the Carons.

Joice says even if the deputies weren't able to return the gifts, she would still have peace of mind knowing that they would be going to a good cause.
