Emergency crews rescue man from Big Lake

NEAR MARTIN, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Were following a story out of Martin after a report of a man who fell through the ice, twice.

Crews were able to rescue the man just about 11:00.

The fire chief tells us he is at the hospital right now being checked out for hypothermia.

The hole the man fell through is almost halfway across the lake where the ice is certainly not thick enough to walk on.

It appears he was planning on fishing out there. His fishing gear is actually all still out there.

A family who lives nearby tells us they heard a man screaming down by the lake and when they got there they saw that he was in up to his head and couldn't get out.

The fire chief says it was hard to even get to the man because the access road to get down to the lake is very steep, about a mile long and coated in ice.

They were eventually able to save the man and as we mentioned he is currently in the hospital

Police did want to pass along this warning today: please stay off the ice. It's often much more dangerous than it may look.
