California man makes stranger's Santa wish come true

SAN DIEGO (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Kindergartener's Dear Santa list turned into quite the Christmas surprise.

The 5-year-old attached her list to a red balloon and released it into the sky over San Diego, along with 23 of her classmates.

But Joie's balloon didn't make it to the North Pole.

It fell out of the sky onto Terry Hardin, an unsuspecting person below 15 miles away.

When Hardin read the note, he knew he had to do something.

The note read, "Dear Santa, I would like to have a mermaid doll with a bow for Christmas. Thank you, Love, Joie."

"I had to find this little girl because I don't know where this balloon came from," he said. "I had no clue; I had to find out."

He tracked the girl down at her school, and delivered her gift, but little Joie wasn't the only one receiving a gift that day.

Hardin's mother passed away just over a year ago.

Her name was Joie--spelled in the same unique way as that little girl.
