Kalamazoo group puts activist twist on Christmas carols

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Kalamazoo group took the festive holiday tradition of caroling and added an activist twist.

Michigan United Community Leaders created carols with lyrics about raising Michigan's minimum wage.

They then visited the homes of state lawmakers to spread their message.

Since August, the group has been calling on representatives to raise the minimum wage to $10 per hour by 2016.

They have also been trying to schedule a meeting with Governor Snyder to discuss wages and poverty.

Michigan United says it's important to raise minimum wage because a person working full-time at $7.40 per hour is considered living in poverty.
