Mattawan officer who saved family's gifts gets a big thank you

MATTAWAN, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Mattawan police officer got a huge thank you Friday, after saving a family's Christmas presents.

A fire broke out in the attic of the Carlisle family's home early Christmas morning.

Quick thinking by Sergeant Scott Herbert and the Mattwan Fire Department allowed the family to enjoy part of the holiday, though.

"It was pretty scary there at the end," Sgt. Herbert said of the retrieval. "We did see flames on the roof when we were going in to the back door to get those gifts, but there was no way we were going to leave them in there. We were going to do everything we could to get them out."

James Carlisle says just having those gifts helped his family make it through, after losing almost everything.

If you'd like to help the family out, a fund is being set up at the Kalsee Credit Union in Kalamazoo, under the name Anna Carlisle.
