Red Cross of W. Mich. offers statistics on 2013

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - In a year that had deadly tornadoes, fierce wildfires, and destructive floods in many states, the American Red Cross of West Michigan was very busy helping those in need.

On Monday, they announced they responded to 749 disasters, and assisted more than 2,000 people between January 1 and December 30 of 2013.

Many Red Cross volunteers from West Michigan assisted with disaster responses across the U.S., including the Oklahoma tornadoes, Colorado flood, and the Indiana tornado in November.

Here in West Michigan, they helped dozens displaced after home fires.

Most recently, they opened three shelters for those without power after a severe ice storm struck West Michigan.
