Grand Haven woman dies in childbirth after rare complication

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Grand Haven woman died this week after experiencing a rare complication during childbirth.

34-year-old Elizabeth Curtis lost consciousness during labor Saturday at North Ottawa Community Hospital, after experiencing what appeared to be an amniotic fluid embolism.

There were no prior complications with the pregnancy, which was her second.

The rare condition happens when fetal material enters the mother's bloodstream and causes an allergic-like reaction.

The baby, Katherine Elizabeth, was born healthy at 7 pounds, 6 ounces.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Grand Haven.
