Crews investigating Lawton house fire

LAWTON, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Crews are working to figure out what caused a fire in a Van Buren County home that sent two women to the hospital.

The fire started just before 8:00 p.m. Saturday in the 600 block of North Main Street in Lawton.

When crews first arrived on-scene, flames were shooting out of the home, and they learned a woman was trapped in the front bedroom.

The Lawton Fire Chief says crews ran into major problems getting through the front door because there were several items in the way.

They then made the quick decision to go in through the woman's bedroom window to get her.

The elderly woman was given oxygen until they could safely free her from the home, but she suffered from smoke inhalation.

Her daughter had cuts and burns on her hands because she was trying to get back inside to her mom.

No foul play is suspected, and the fire remains under investigation.
