Hundreds lend a hand to those in need

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Hundreds of volunteers filled the fairgrounds in Kalamazoo Saturday to package boxes of food for local families in need.

The Greater Kalamazoo Holiday Food Drive is the largest food distribution program in Southwest Michigan, serving 1,500 families this year.

Each family will receive a week's worth of fresh produce, meat, bread, canned goods and more.

Local businesses, schools, food banks and law enforcement agencies have been collecting those food donations for the past week.

Saturday morning, scores of people -- both young and old -- dedicated their time to putting the food baskets together.

Harold West, the event chair says that food is going to hardworking families who just can't make ends meet. "This food is just a little extra helping hand to get through the holiday season and that's all we're trying to do is just help our neighbor. I want to thank the community, a formal thanks, from the bottom of my heart to the community for helping us do this."

Once the volunteers were done packing boxes, they hand-delivered the food to the families.

This is the 21st year for the Greater Kalamazoo Holiday Food Drive. West tells Newschannel 3 he believes there were a record number of volunteers this year.
