Better Business Bureau offers tips to avoid unregistered contractors

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The Better Business Bureau is issuing a warning about contractors looking to take advantage of storm victims.

The BBB says it's not uncommon for unregistered contractors to rush into areas dealing with storm damage.

It's offering a series of tips to help protect you from getting taken advantage of.

The agency says to shop around and try to get quotes from three to four contractors to make sure you're getting a good deal.

It also warns against paying in advance, and advises you to pay by credit card if at all possible.

The BBB says to be cautious of anyone who demands you pay full or half up front, and make sure to get a written contract that spells out the price and what work will be done.
