WB I-94 reopens after multi-car crash

PORTAGE, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Westbound I-94 just east of Oakland Drive was briefly shut down just after 8:00 p.m. Thursday.

Dispatchers in Portage confirmed the shutdown to Newschannel 3 at around 8:15 p.m.

Around a half-hour later, one lane was re-opened. At around 9:30, the road was completely cleared.

According to Portage Police, six vehicles were involved in the incident, which stemmed from a pickup truck losing control and crashing into the median barrier.

At that point, two other vehicles lost control attempting to avoid the first crash and sideswiped each other.

A semi truck stopped in response to the accidents, and was struck from behind by another car.

Finally another pickup truck lost control attempting to avoid all the other collisions, and wound up in the ditch on the north side of the highway, where the truck rolled over.

Three people were transported to area hospitals with minor injuries.

Police say high traffic speeds, tailgating, and icy conditions were to blame.
