Zeeland man gets kidney from woman he barely knew

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - A Zeeland man received a new kidney last week thanks to a live donor he barely knew.

The Grand Rapids Press reports that 58-year-old Duke Guy received the kidney from Sarah Farkas in a transplant Jan. 13 at Mercy Health St. Mary's hospital in Grand Rapids. Guy has battled kidney disease for 30 years.

The 41-year-old Farkas says she knew of Guy's plight and told him on a Sunday at church several months ago, "I think God told me to give you one of my kidneys."

Guy says the kidney "saved my life."

Nearly 97,000 people in the U.S. are waiting for kidney transplants, with 2,600 in Michigan.
