Howard City man arrested for child abuse

HOWARD CITY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A West Michigan man is behind bars, suspected of child abuse.

The child is badly injured and the suspect was arrested by Michigan State Police after the 13-month-old was taken to the hospital.

Troopers responded to the Gerber Memorial Hospital in Fremont Saturday night to investigate serious injuries to a child.

Investigators say the baby girl was brought to the hospital by her mother after she was injured while under the care of her mother's boyfriend.

Doctors say she suffered three broken ribs and bad bruising to the head, face and abdomen. They say it appears she was abused. Investigators identified the boyfriend as the suspect and arrested him.

He is a 26-year-old man from Howard City. He is in jail waiting for arraignment. Police say he will face one count of first-degree child abuse. That is a felony offense and is punishable by up to life in prison.
