EPA considers possible Enbridge penalties

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The Environmental Protection Agency says it's considering possible penalties for Enbridge Energy after the company failed to meet an important clean-up deadline.

Enbridge was instructed to dredge contaminated sediment from three areas of the Kalamazoo River by December 31.

It successfully cleaned up two of those spots, but asked for more time to finish the third in Comstock Township--a request which was denied.

The EPA won't say what sanctions, if any, Enbridge might face.

An Enbridge spokesman says clean-up work will resume in the spring.
