WMU moves forward with East Campus plans
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Western Michigan University officials are moving forward with plans to renovate East Campus and you've got another chance to weigh in.
WMU has decided to focus just on the core of East Hall. That means the large wings of the building will be demolished, along with the other East Campus buildings that were torn down last year.
East Hall will be turned into the new alumni center for the university.
WMU hopes to preserves the building's historic designation while still incorporating more modern and sustainable building features.
The new center will cost $21.4 million. Demolition of the two wings will likely start next month.
Had they been saved, university officials say it would cost an additional $20-million.
University leaders are looking for you input on the design process for the new alumni center. They are holding a series of community sessions.
The next one is Tuesday from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. at the Little Theatre on the corner of Oakland Drive and Oliver Lane. It is open to the public.
Construction of the new WMU Alumni Center is expected to be complete by summer 2015.
