Man caught attempting to smuggle drugs into prison

COLDWATER, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - State Police say they caught a man red-handed smuggling drugs into prison just 12 days after he walked free from the facility.

Troopers say they caught Cushmere Wallace throwing two footballs packed with drugs and contraband over the Lakeland Correctional prison fence in Coldwater.

They add that they found Wallace January 19, freezing in the snow on the road behind the prison.

At first, he denied what he was doing, but police say the snow aided in their investigation.

Wallace eventually told police that he was trying to pay off a debt he owed another inmate, and that his getaway car got stuck in the snow.

The driver of that car was also arrested for conspiracy.

Wallace was charged with violation of probation, including contraband into prison and trespassing.
