Former Defense Secretary blasts President Obama

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - There have been some scathing new revelations about the Obama Administration by a former Defense Secretary.

In a new memoir, Robert Gates slams the president's leadership and commitment to the war in Afghanistan.

He writes that by 2010 he concluded the president - quote - "doesn't believe in his own strategy, and doesn't consider the war to be his... For him, it's all about getting out."

He also calls Joe Biden a man of integrity, but says the Vice President has been wrong on nearly every foreign major policy.

Still, he praised the president's decision to go after Osama bin Laden, saying it was one of the bravest decisions he ever witnessed.

In an interview with CBS' Charlie Rose in 2012 he explained why.

"My concern was whether or not he was there. And -- and what I think people don't realize that made the decision tough for the president was we didn't have one single piece of hard data that he was actually in that compound, not one. The whole thing was a circumstantial case built by analysts at CIA," said Gates.

The White House is reacting to the book. A spokesman says President Obama "deeply appreciates Gates' service" and welcomes differing points of view from his national security team.
