Woman sexually assaulted, suspect arrested

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Police in Grand Rapids have arrested a suspect in a sexual assault.

The assault happened on Wednesday around 9:00 a.m. at an apartment in the 500 block of 7th Street NW.

The victim says that she was asleep when she was awakened by the suspect and assaulted in her bedroom. The suspect fled the apartment and the victim followed him down to the lobby of the apartment building before calling police.

Officers tried to track the suspect with a K-9, but were not successful. They interviewed several people on the scene who had seen the suspect.

Police were able to identify a suspect and conducted a search of his home later that night. He was taken into custody without incident.

Friday the Kent County Prosecutor's Officer authorized charges against the man. He has been identified as Jose Guadalupe Suarez-Cruz.

Suarez-Cruz faces one charge of criminal sexual conduct, 1st degree and one count of home invasion, 1st degree. He is currently being held on a $250,000 cash bond.
