Paramedics ask for help in keeping citizens, crews safe

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Paramedics are also asking for help keeping citizens and rescue crews safe.

We met with a team at Life EMS Ambulance in Kalamazoo Tuesday, and they say the cold weather is definitely presenting challenges for them.

"Definitely getting up to houses when driveways aren't shoveled, having troubles getting out to the ambulance, sidewalks aren't shoveled and we're having to do some of that in order to get people out," explained Field Supervisor Erik Olsen.

Olsen says that Life EMS Ambulance has been sending out 4-wheel drive vehicles to pick paramedics up in some cases, so that they can get to work and be ready when emergencies arise.

He says many of the calls he's seen are people who are sick, but are having trouble getting to the hospital on their own.
