Michigan holds first human trafficking awareness day Jan. 11

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Michigan will hold its first Human Trafficking Awareness Day on January 11.

The day is being held to inform people about human trafficking, its life-altering effect on women and children, and how prevalent it is in Michigan.

The day was designated through a Senate resolution, co-sponsored by Senator John Proos, and adopted in December.

Michigan ranks 7th in the nation in frequency of trafficking.

In 2013, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette formed the Michigan Commission on Human Trafficking to combat the problem.
