Rose Bowl finally arrives for Spartans, fans

PASADENA, Calif. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The day has finally arrived.

The game considered the first Rose Bowl was staged in 1902, and featured Stanford losing 49-0 to Michigan.

No. 5 Stanford has returned to Pasadena for their 14th appearance 112 years later, and will face No. 4 Michigan State in the 100th edition of college football's quintessential bowl game.

Spartan fans are hoping the new year will bring some big celebrations in Pasadena, as 50,000 Spartan fans are expected to be in town for the game, as they're looking for their Spartans to bring home their biggest win in decades.

A huge Spartan pep rally was held Tuesday afternoon to pump up those fans, as Holland native Kirk Cousins served as an honorary captain for the team.

The game isn't for a No. 1 ranking--that will come early next week for Florida State and Auburn--but when you grow up in the midwest, it's the ultimate destination.

This is the green-and-white's first Rose Bowl appearance since 1988, and Spartan Nation near and far is basking in the glow.

The game kicks off at 5:00 p.m., and Newschannel 3 will have continuing coverage all New Year's Day.
