Firefighters battle two house fires, one deadly

KENT COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Firefighters in Kent County are investigating two weekend house fires. One of them was fatal.

Crews were first called out to a fire in the 900 block of Alpine Avenue Northwest in Grand Rapids around 7:00 Sunday night.

Moments later a second call came in for another house fire.

The second one was just a few miles down the road in the 1000 block of Needham Court Northwest in Walker.

Walker firefighters tell us a neighbor noticed smoke and flames coming from the home and broke down the door.

The neighbor then found the homeowner and dragged him out.

The homeowner later died. Police tell us he was in his 40's and lived alone. According to M-Live, he had a physical disability.

It took firefighters about half an hour to get the fire under control.

It appears the fire started in the kitchen.

Meanwhile, at least eleven Grand Rapids fire trucks responded to the first fire on Alpine Avenue. When they arrived they found smoke and flames on the first and second floors.

Firefighters say the house a total loss.
