Muskegon Co. man arrested, charged with videotaping tanners
MUSKEGON, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Muskegon Police have arrested a 25-year-old Norton Shores man, who is accused of setting up a cellphone to videotape tanning customers.
Officers responded Wednesday to the Planet Fitness on Henry Street on reports of a 21-year-old Norton Shores woman having been videotaped against her will.
Police say that around the same time, a male employee of the business called to report that his cellphone had been stolen.
The victim told police that she had disrobed in a private tanning booth, tanned, and as she finished, found a cellphone concealed in the room recording her, which she took and turned over to police.
The owner of the phone, who reported it stolen, admitted during subsequent interviews with police that it had not been stolen, and that he concealed it to record the victim.
He also admitted to recording several customers while they tanned, claiming that he watched the recordings and immediately deleted them.
Police executed search warrants at the suspect's home, but found no evidence that any of the videos had been saved or shared.
The man was arrested Friday and is being held on charges of capturing or distributing images of an unclothed person, and a false report of a felony.
He is currently in the Muskegon County Jail.
