Brutal winter leading to salt shortage for some communities

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The brutal winter is leading to a new problem for some municipalities.

All the snow is leading to a rock salt shortage.

In an attempt to dry the treacherous roads, crews across the midwest and northeast are blowing through their salt supply.

Some towns have completely run out, and others are close, and getting more is growing difficult.

Most rock salt is shipped on barges, but the frozen rivers are slowing deliveries.

And with weeks of winter left, there is concern that the shortage will only get worse.
