Attempted arson suspect Atkinson owned several properties across Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Sources confirmed to Newschannel 3 that Lola Clark Atkinson, one of two suspects in an attempted arson in the 1300 block of Park Street on Friday, was a recipient of the Woman of Achievement award from the YWCA.

Atkinson is also the First Vice President of the Metropolitan Kalamazoo Branch of the NAACP.

Newschannel 3 dug deeper into the case and discovered that Atkinson owns or co-owns more than a dozen properties in the Kalamazoo area.

Three of them are located near previous arson or suspicious fire cases--one on Ada Street, one on North Park, and another on East Patterson--where a string of suspicious fires have been reported since November.

One of Atkinson's homes--at 149 E. Patterson Street--also reportedly burned down in November of 2011.

Atkinson had been renting the property to a family that had just moved out two weeks prior, so it was vacant at the time.

Just last month, fire officials told Newschannel 3 that they did not think the arsons or suspicious fires were linked in any way.

At this time, Atkinson has not been implicated in any other fire.

Newschannel 3 will continue to dig into the story and bring you new updates as they come in.
