Nearly 2 days later, police still hunt for kidnapping, rape suspect
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - 40 hours later, Kalamazoo Police are still searching for the suspect in a reported abduction and rape.
It happened around 1:00 Wednesday morning, near Fairview and University Streets in the Westnedge Hill neighborhood.
Police are still actively searching for the suspect, but as the hours tick by with no one in custody, neighbors are growing more concerned.
"It's really important to keep our neighborhood safe," said neighbor Valerie Elliot. "That's a stunning thing that happened. I think it will give everyone pause."
Kalamazoo Police say a 24-year-old woman was walking near Fairview and University Streets around 1:00 a.m. Wednesday, when a man in a red extended-cab pickup truck pulled up.
"The gentleman that was driving a red pickup truck did grab the victim, there was a struggle, and the victim was pulled into the vehicle," explained Kalamazoo Public Safety Assistant Chief Don Webster.
Police say he took off, sexually assaulted the woman, and then dropped her back off in the same area.
"That's a little more frightening because it could be someone that lives in the area, it could be somebody who followed someone, I don't know," Elliot said. "I mean, it's not like they were just going down Westnedge, which is a pretty main thoroughfare."
Elliot says the Westnedge Hill Neighborhood Association isn't active right now, but she's still able to get in touch with everyone, and that's exactly what she plans to do.
"I'm going to send out an alert to them in case they haven't already heard the information, and I can update anyone who's interested," she said.
Police say the suspect is a white man in his mid-to-late 30's, with dirty blonde or brown hair, 5'7" to 6 feet tall.
He was described as having a short, shaggy beard, and wearing oval shaped glasses.
He was wearing a black or brown puffy winter coat, dark pants and an orange hunting-style knit hat.
We mentioned the red pickup truck, which police say may have a 2x4 sticking out of the back.
It has cream colored seats and is a stick shift.
There is also a private school just feet away from where the incident took place.
We spoke with the school and some parents who say that because of the circumstances, they are not necessarily worried about their children's safety, but that the situation is concerning.
