Flu death reported in St. Joseph County

COLDWATER, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Another flu death has been reported this season, bringing the total deaths in West Michigan to 13.

A St. Joseph County man over the age of 60 is the  most recent reported victim, and a statement from the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency states that the man tested positive for influenza A/H1N1.

"We don't know if this person had received an influenza shot," said health officer Steve Todd. "But we do know that immunization is the best defense against the flu."

The health department in Branch, Hillsdale, and St. Joseph Counties says it is starting to see a decrease in the number of flu and flu-like cases being reported.

"In spite of recent declines, we know that influenza can still peak as late as March or April," Todd reminded. "So we continue to encourage people to make sure they are vaccinated."
