Attempted arson suspect a former YWCA Woman of Achievment award winner, Kzoo NAACP 1st VP

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Sources confirmed to Newschannel 3 that Lola Clark Atkinson, one of two suspects in an attempted arson in the 1300 block of Park Street on Friday, was a recipient of the Woman of Achievement award from the YWCA.

Atkinson is also the First Vice President of the Metropolitan Kalamazoo Branch of the NAACP.

On Tuesday, police received a tip about an arson that was going to occur in the 1300 block of N. Park Street.

Detectives staked out the residence said to be the arson target, and at around 3:00 a.m., Atkinson and another suspect--56-year-old Elvis Patterson, of Kalamazoo--were arrested in the act, as they were making preparations to set the home on fire.

Both Patterson and Atkinson were arraigned on charges of conspiracy to commit arson, and attempted second degree arson.

Both were released on $500 personal recognizance bonds.
