Stick It for a Cure
COLDWATER, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - More than 100 high schoolers plan to "stick it" to cancer in Coldwater this weekend.
The gymnastics team at Coldwater High School is hosting a meet on Saturday called Stick It for a Cure.
A lot of the girls on the team and even some of our helpers have had experience with cancer and tragedies that have come from cancer, says Kala Sperbeck, one of the teams captains. So I think that really helps the girls and the whole team just really rally around this idea and the importance of this cause.
Over the past four years, Stick It for a Cure has been able to provide free mammograms to local women in need.
This year they're setting the bar even higher, hoping to raise 5,000 dollars for the CHC Cancer Center in Branch County.
We took up the challenge to provide a sound system for our cancer patients at the local hospital, says coach Kim Nichols. That's the key point: it's coming right back to our community and helping our family members.
Twelve schools from across Michigan face off Saturday, featuring 160 gymnasts.
Gymnastics is really fun, Sperbeck says. It's a cool sport to watch, not something you see every day.
The crowds will also be able to bid on more than 100 silent auction gift baskets, each one made in memory of a loved one lost to cancer.
My grandma passed from stomach cancer a few years back and so I've put together a basket in her memory of something we shared together, Nichols adds. We both loved to garden and we both loved to scrapbook so I have a scrapbook basket.
The team says they're excited to use their talents for more than just medals.
This is what it's all about, says Nichols. Being involved in your community and helping each other.
Stick It for a Cure runs Saturday from 10am to 3pm in Coldwater.
