Victim's family speaks out after alleged torture in Kzoo Twp. apartment

KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A mother was allegedly held captive and tortured for nearly 24 hours by her live-in boyfriend, with three children in the apartment.

Kalamazoo Township Police responded to the 1900 block of Colgrove Friday morning.

A man was inside, threatening to shoot officers if they came inside.

Police say he terrorized his girlfriend while his young kids watched.

The victim says it all started with a small argument and then escalated from there.

We're told the suspect had several weapons, knives, a sword, and a gun.

All she cared about was if her kids were safe.

The victim's grandmother and aunt told Newschannel 3 Friday night that she was tortured for nearly 24 hours--starting from Thursday morning until Friday morning.

It all happened at the apartments in the 1900 block of Colgrove in Kalamazoo Township.

Family members say 30-year-old Frankie Haywood held his girlfriend captive; photos show the different rooms they were in, holding a gun to head and chin at times, and other times, they say she was beaten until she blacked out.

"He's beat her to a pulp," said the victim's aunt, Terry Skalski. "She's got bruises everywhere, black eyes, of course she's got a 4-month-old."

Three kids were inside the apartment at the time--a 4-month-old girl, a 5-year-old, and an 11-year-old.

The victim, who didn't wish to be identified, said, "he told me he was going to make me famous."

She also tells Newschannel 3 that Haywood had a long sword with a case on it, and was constantly hitting her with it.

"He said he was going to slug the baby in the head and blow her brains out and that he'd put needles all in her and dump lighter fluid on her and she was able to get out and make a phone call," said the victim's grandmother Diane Holbrook.

The victim went on to say, "I was scared. I thought he was going to kill me. He told his kids he was probably going to kill me."

While Haywood was in the bathroom, the victim tells us she was able to escape and make a phone call.

Police, who aren't identifying the suspect, say the man inside the apartment told officers he would shoot them if they came in.

Fearing for the victim's life, they kicked in the door and arrested the man.

The suspect remains in the Kalamazoo County Jail, facing a slew of charges.

The victim, who was badly beaten, says she never went to the hospital.
