Convicted felon arrested in Van Buren County

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The Van Buren County Sheriff's Department arrested a convicted felon early Saturday morning, after a traffic stop lead to marijuana being found inside the vehicle.

Sheriff Dale R. Gribler says while on patrol a deputy saw notice a vehicle on Interstate 94 violating traffic laws.

The deputy stopped the vehicle for those violations and smelled marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

The driver was removed from the vehicle to talk about the presence of drugs in the vehicle.

The deputy confirmed there were drugs inside the vehicle.

He continued to investigate and found a loaded 9mm handgun in the glove box and marijuana also inside the vehicle.

The driver is a felon out of Texas with previous drug charges and had lied about past contact with law enforcement.

The suspect also had three small children with him in the vehicle.

Further investigation found the front seat passenger was also  in possession of pot and had a warrant for her arrest out of the Genessee County Sheriff's Office.

She was cited for drug charges and later released.

The male driver was arrested for felony firearms violations, drug possession, and traffic violation and he is being lodged at the Van Buren County Jail.

The children in the vehicle were not harmed.
