Van Buren Co. man facing multiple charges, accused of holding woman hostage

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A 33-year-old man is facing charges of impersonating a firefighter, drug possession, and rape.

Scottie Lee Costner was arraigned Thursday afternoon in Van Buren County.

Newschannel 3 has been working to get to the bottom of court documents in what is a very bizarre story.

Just prior to the most recent arrest, Costner was arraigned on the impersonation charge.

Sources tell Newschannel 3 that shortly after he was released on bond, he went to the alleged victim's home.

Considered a habitual offender, Costner's criminal record goes back to 1997 when he was only 17.

Charges he's facing now could put him in prison for the rest of his life.

Van Buren County deputies say the attack happened at a home on Red Arrow Highway just outside of Lawrence, and held the alleged victim against her will for several days.

The victim had a personal protection order against Costner prior to the attack, which was issued after Costner's last arrest on February 27, for impersonating a firefighter on multiple occasions.

The Van Buren County Sheriff's office says Costner would pass cars in his pickup truck equipped with flashing lights.

He then slowed down, forced the other vehicle to stop and would berate the driver for not pulling over, claiming he was a firefighter.

Whether it's coincidence or not isn't clear, but according to Van Buren County, at least two of the drivers Costner yelled at were firefighters themselves.

They reported the incident and later identified him in a lineup.

Costner's bond was set at $150,000, and he is due back in court in a matter of weeks.
