Police searching for suspects after chase and crash

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The search continues for the suspects who led police on a chase, then crashed into a utility pole, early Sunday morning in Kalamazoo.

Around 5 a.m. Sunday, Chris Sebastian says he woke up to the sound of police sirens blaring outside his house. "We weren't really sure what was going on, we were looking out windows," he says.

Kalamazoo Public Safety says it all started with a tip.

"We had an identified victim who gave a description of the vehicle, which may have a weapon inside," Sgt. Brian Boyer says.

Officers soon located the vehicle -- with five people inside -- and attempted to pull it over. Police say the driver sped away, starting a chase.

It soon had a dangerous end, when the Chevy SUV slammed into a power pole at Woodward Ave. and Elmwood St. Officers say four of the suspects fled the scene.

"We're still looking for the driver. We've done K-9 tracking, trying to locate it. At this time, right now, we haven't located a weapon."

Police say they found a suspect near the scene. Thirty minutes after the crash, neighbors say they witnessed officers arrest a man who was hiding under a deck.

"The neighbor was aware that something was going on and had the police come over. Next thing I heard is that if someone didn't come out from underneath, they're going to send in the dogs," Sebastian says. "A man pushed out the fence underneath the deck and police, with guns drawn, arrested him."

While this dangerous situation unfolded outside Sebastian's house, he's just glad it had a safe end. "I don't feel any less safe than I did before," he says.

The utility pole nearly snapped in half from the crash. Consumers Energy crews replaced it later in the morning.
