St. Joseph Co. woman behind bars after death of ex

BURR OAK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A 34-year-old St. Joseph County woman is behind bars tonight, charged with open murder and felony firearm in the death of her ex.

County Sheriff Brad Balk says deputies were called out to Townline Road near Farrand, near Burr Oak, late Thursday night for a homicide.

There, they found the body of 35-year-old Dennis Brooks.

Prosecutors say he died from a single gunshot to the head.

Newschannel 3 obtained a copy of the 911 call, made by the brother of the suspect, one Maria Williams.

"My sister just came home ... um ... and she shot her ex," he said in the call.

"It was kind of weird, because you don't get calls like that all the time," Sheriff Balk said. "We knew we definitely had something here for sure."

Williams' brother told authorities exactly where his sister left brooks.

He says the two got into a fight, that Brooks started slapping her, and then Williams shot him.

The Sheriff does believe Williams had a personal protection order out against Brooks, but says they think she contacted him.

Brooks does have a lengthy criminal history, but it does not appear there were any domestic issues.

Williams is due back in court later this month.
